We recommend starting the process at least 4 months before you would like to move to Portugal, and ideally 5-6 months in advance. This allows time to assemble your documents, secure your proof of accommodation in Portugal, and wait for the Portuguese government’s approval.

No, you will need to apply and attend an in-person appointment in your current country of legal residence.

Yes, main applicants can sponsor a spouse, domestic partner, children under 18, dependent children 18 and older, and dependent parents over 65. Your dependents will apply under the Accompanying Family Member visa.

Portugal’s immigration department is currently reviewing changes to the family reunification visa and process, and we may recommend family reunification in the future.

To qualify for visa renewal, you will need to spend at least 16 out of your first 24 months in Portugal. Said another way, you can’t spend more than 8 months outside of Portugal during your first 2 years. You also cannot spend more than 6 consecutive months out of Portugal.
