Why Spain Continues to Attract Expats<\/strong>

Spain is one of the most popular relocation destinations in the world, and the results are consistent across every survey and source. In the 2024 InterNations Expat Insider report, Spain ranked fourth globally for overall expat satisfaction, with 84% of expats there saying they are happy, well above the global average of 68%. Spanish cities dominated the city rankings: Valencia claimed the number one spot worldwide, with M\u00e1laga and Alicante also in the top five.

The appeal comes down to a specific set of practical conditions that translate directly into daily life.

Healthcare is a major factor. Spain's Sistema Nacional de Salud (SNS) is publicly funded and largely free at the point of use for registered residents. Private healthcare is widely available and significantly cheaper than in many other countries.

Comprehensive private insurance for individuals typically costs a fraction of American premiums, making it a practical and popular option for expats who don't yet qualify for the public system.

The climate across most of the country is exceptional: mild winters and long, dry summers in the south and centre, a greener and cooler Atlantic coast in the north. Cities are walkable, high-speed rail connects major destinations, and urban infrastructure in Madrid, Barcelona, and Valencia is modern and well-maintained.

Everyday costs run considerably lower than in the US, UK, or Canada. Groceries, dining, and transport are where the difference is most pronounced. Housing varies by location, but even in Spain's most expensive cities, comparable quality costs less than in London or New York.

As an EU member state and part of the Schengen Area, Spanish residency also unlocks free movement across much of Europe.
